SHE IS A "D" LISTER WITH NO FANS

Oh, my God! When did people became inspiring or favourites because of numbers? Stay with the conversation....

First thing first, let me apologise for the blog silence, i have other commitments at the moment that is taken my time. Second thing, my hands must have mistakenly pressed the wrong button in my camera, all the photos I took over the weekend came out blurry. I only manage to sort it out this yesterday.

I’ve been to some bloggers and fashion events, I have heard some terrible conversations. This time, my ears were bleeding, it was even worse. The blogging world of TODAY is all about numbers and higher figures. Below is the conversation from the two bloggers xxx who sat next to me at the event.

Conversation:

"Look at her she just walk in, she is a super blogger with 2 million gram follower my favourite girl in the game, who is the next blogger that just walk in too? I don't know WHO THAT IS, she is not popular or anything".Wait for them to announce her name and check her Gram page out. Later SILENCE, SILENCE AND SILENCE after checking her Gram page. NOT my type she doesn't have millions of followers, the second girl reply, but the girl got style at least give her that. HaHa style with no followers and thousand of likes, she doesn't cut it. She is more like a D-Lister".

As I struggle to hold my breath after listening to such pathetic talk from those two girls, It became very clear that blogging is now known as THE HAVE AND THE HAVE NOT GAME. So because some bloggers don't have fans and likes on social media, that means they are now D-Lister's? I don't have any intention to pressure myself to compete with the “bigger” “better” "famous" and "more fans" bloggers, DARLINGS I can't deal. I am not the type of person who sees a designer
bags with 20 million followers so that blogger is automatic inspiring or become my favourites. Hell No NO.

My very good friend who is a fashion editor at one of London top magazine always says, It’s really incredible how many brands are only interested in Social media numbers, some of them deliberately invites bloggers to events just because of those numbers they see on Instagram. (how sad)

It doesn’t matter if their style fits the brand or not, if they can sell the product or not, the only attention to counts the numbers. That is where the real problem started from.

This is some of the reasons I don't normally attend such events, I get lots of invites, but some of them bring nothing but humiliation.

Today blogosphere there are so many pretty face with nothing to offer, and so many accusing people wrongly of not having enough fans. One fact remains, this type of people brings nothing to the table. The only thing they add to the fashion industry is a pretty face, eyebrows and accusations. No support what so ever.

I really don't know how people come to terms with who is their favourites bloggers or inspiring blogger, this is something I still can't get my head around.

There are people I genuinely admire for their great style, not because of their social media current status.

I will be very interested to hear your thought on this subject matter.

I will be back soon.

  4. i totally agree with you. while i do follow fashion bloggers with tons of "followers", I'm really selective with them.

i'd rather follow a starter blog with impeccable/unique style!

    Have a great day!

  5. This post is so relevant!! It's sad to see how many companies value numbers over quality of content. Influencers are known for how many followers they have now, and that is just sad! Often times I will stumble upon a smaller influencer who produces amazing content out of true passion, and I love that. I just hope that more people become interested in actual content and quality!

  7. According to that I´ll be a d-lister because of my social media follower numbers (: I don´t know why it is like that in the bloggers world. We all know that you can by twitter, instagram etc. follower and many blogger do so. So why is the number so important for brands when not real! To me happened that some bloggers have unfollow me on instagram as soon as they got more followers. It´s a sad blogger world. I want the bloggers united spirit. I always do follow a blogger back on social media, because I think we have to support each other! So thanks a lot for sharing this post and your thoughts on it! xoxo

  8. Nice post..i follow many bloggers who are not so "popular" on social media and i can say they are my favorites..I find that the most "popular"ones seem to "push" many many products without giving an honest review..plus they never answer questions,it seems they are just interested in showing of and care for the likes..

  10. Wise words (as always), Sophia! The other question is: When did blogging became a (selling) industry? The online world is growing so fast that everybody wants to have a piece of the cake. I think it's ok for those who don't have a Plan B or are searching for a job but D egrade a passionate fellow blogger is a shame. Thank you for this thought provoking post, Sophia! I'm sure there are a lot of pros and cons to discuss here. ;)

  16. I'm sorry that all your pics turned out blurry (yeah happened to me many times). I love your outfit with the cool ripped jeans. Sophia everything you said is so true and so sad. People nowadays are only interested in how many followers one has. They (brands) don't even care if you have true followers. As long as of the number is high.

  19. I totally agree, it's really annoying and sad how blogging is much more about how many followers you have on social media than the content. Many people don't care about individuality anymore, just fame, that's the only thing that matters to them.
I love your outfit on the last picture so much. The bold colors are gorgeous, and I'm so in love with your bag!

  21. You make a great point there, after being in this industry for so many years, I'm used to rejection sometimes because my social following isn't what they want. As we are used as advertising outlets, the brands are only interested in those with a huge following as it makes them successful with their advertising. I can't speak for what those bloggers were saying as that's just down right rude and simple minded though, but it would be nice to be judged on our content though! Some just don't get lucky enough to get exposure.

  23. Totally agree with you, Sophia. Numbers have nothing to do with style. I don't get the whole social media circus anyway, I think that's why I am still neither on twitter, fb or whatever there is out there. Far too time consuming for me. Happy Friday. Great pics, btw.

  24. Wow, this post hit home for me; thank you for addressing this! I've also attended my fair share of events and have been so disappointed with seeing bloggers who appear very sweet and genuine on their social media accounts, but in person the very opposite was true, unfortunately. There were some that I was interested in meeting, not because I was fan girling, but because I really liked their content. The only problem was, they were giving me dirty looks and talking about me right in front of my face! Yes, the same person who I liked all their pictures, commented and supported, didn't recognize me and treated me as if I were less than. It was more surprising than hurtful really.

I've never been one to compete with another woman or try to make myself better than, I genuinely love to support and uplift others, especially others that are doing what I'm doing and are facing the same challenges as me. I think we should all seek to encourage and inspire one another. It's sad that we've come to look at numbers and not so much as the overall package. I love connecting with other fabulous bloggers, like yourself, and create conversation and relationships and to me that's what blogging is all about, connecting!

Thanks for touching on a very touchy topic, I commend you for it and support and agree with everything you've mentioned!

I hope you have a wonderful day and an even better weekend, beautiful!

  25. Dear Sophia, so sorry this happend with your pictures, but I like what obviously remains and you show here. Especially the look with the ripped denims look absolutely wonderful! Followers are only numbers and what I appreciate is the real person behind the number and that's why I'm blogging: to live out my creativity and especially for having all these interesting contacts with my dear readers and the writers of the blogs I visit. For me it is only fun and fortunately I'm able to earn my money with my breadwinner job as purchaser :) Enjoy your weekend!

  26. OMG! This so sad. Unfortunately you are right, though: This is the world of blogging. But I think it's more important to stay true to yourself and simply have a sincere passion for fashion. Numbers low or high, keep reminding yourself that you do it 'cause you love it! :)

  27. That's sad. I don't care how many followers a fashion blogger has. If I like their style or content, then i'll follow. I mean, someone with very little followers could have really great style. :)

  28. It is sad that brands look for people with so many followers. I don't even envy people with so many followers because there is a lot of pressure to live a certain lifestyle and post luxury photos with money they don't have which can lead to lots of debt. Also all those followers are just there for the flashy things haha.

  31. oh sophia, that's so sad, you're right.... Sadly not only the brands are looking for bloggers with high numbers, but other bloggers try to do everything do achieve high numbers...everyday I get this mails if I want to pay for a shoutout on XXX profile and it's so annoying....Promising high numbers on ig..Perhaps some people might think it's a game and you have to achieve the highest number, but I think they forget how to have fun with blogging and the community :)

  36. Great post girl! So true, but it's a numbers game and because numbers lead to dollars business have no choice but to go to towards where they can get the biggest bang for their buck. It sucks but it's wonderful to see those of us who haven't continue doing what we love regardless because it's a passion.

  39. Let's be real .... so many of those "it" girls buy their followers ...not all of them but some...Don't you tell me you have 100k followers on instagram and only 250 liked your photo...or 300k followers on Facebook and 30 likes to your most recent post! It's all about marketing !!!There are so many bloggers out there with less followers on social media but do a much better job than all those "it bloggers" ....I think this is the longest comment i've ever written on a blog :)))

    1. Point of correction, you can have 200k followers and people will still not like any photos, you cannot force anyone to like photos. I have followed bloggers like @thefierce_nay with over 100k followers and still gets 800 likes on her photos and @dssaaksss with over 283k followers and still get 1000 like per photos plus many more bloggers i have observed. You cannot conclude that people bought followers because their likes don't add up.

      Delete
  40. Exactly, and I major say that this does not apply only to bloggers and blogging, a lot of people actually bad for not having at least up to 1000 followers.
